People are often interested in how cosmetic acupuncture compares to Botox, and what scientific evidence there is to support its use. At present, there are only a small number of clinical trials for acupuncture for cosmetic purposes, however, information can be drawn from knowledge about general mechanisms of acupuncture, trials for other facial disorders, and from practitioners' clinical experience.
Corben (2008) considers that whilst acupuncture is comparable to Botox for lines and wrinkles, its action is not as dramatic since it increases muscle tone rather tun causing paralysis. This is good news for those wanting a more natural effect. Acupuncture may also have much broader effects than Botox including lifting the brow and jowls, improving circulation and skin tone and improving the general well-being of patients.
This conclusion certainly fits in with what I see in my practice, with lovely natural, subtle effects of cosmetic acupuncture, and wonderful glow to the skin. The perfect way to enhance your skin for the Summer and beyond.
