Sperm Health Is More Than Just a Count

Most standard semen analyses measure count, motility, and morphology, essentially this is how many sperm are present, how well they swim, and how normally their  shape is. But these metrics don’t tell the full story.

One of the most critical but under-tested aspects of male fertility is sperm DNA integrity. Even with good numbers on paper, underlying issues like oxidative stress and DNA fragmentation can significantly affect fertilisation, embryo development, implantation, and miscarriage risk.

What Causes Oxidative Stress in Sperm?

Sperm are especially vulnerable to oxidative damage due to their high concentration of unsaturated fats, and limited ability to repair themselves. Common contributors include:

  • Chronic stress

  • Poor diet (especially low in antioxidants or high in processed foods)

  • Environmental toxins (like pesticides, plastics, and heavy metals)

  • Smoking or recreational drugs

  • Alcohol

  • Heat exposure (think laptops on laps, saunas, tight underwear)

  • Infections or inflammation in the reproductive tract

Over time, these factors can lead to increased DNA fragmentation in sperm—damaging the genetic material that’s passed on to the embryo.

Why This Matters for Natural and Assisted Conception

Even in IVF or ICSI cycles, where fertilisation is assisted, high levels of sperm DNA damage can affect the quality of embryos, implantation success, and risk of early miscarriage.

The good news? Sperm regenerates every 72–90 days. That means there’s a meaningful window of time to make changes—and see improvements.

How Acupuncture and Lifestyle Support Male Fertility

Acupuncture isn’t just for women, it can also be incredibly supportive for men, especially in reducing stress, improving circulation to the reproductive organs, and lowering inflammation.

In the context of male fertility, regular acupuncture can:

  • Improve sperm parameters, including motility and morphology

  • Reduce oxidative stress, supporting healthier DNA integrity

  • Balance hormones like testosterone and improve energy, libido, and sleep

  • Support mental and emotional wellbeing, which often goes unspoken in male fertility journeys

Combined with personalised nutrition, targeted supplementation, and lifestyle adjustments, this approach can offer men a clear and proactive path to support their fertility.

Breaking the Silence Around Male Fertility

Many men feel left out of the fertility process—either because they don’t know they can (or should) seek support, or because the conversation has never been opened. But fertility is a shared experience, and the opportunity for healing exists on both sides.

Supporting male factor fertility is never about blame, it’s about empowerment. Understanding what’s going on beneath the surface opens the door to real change.
